I can do it myself!
I don't trust anyone to do it as well as I would.
I can deal with it; I'll just learn as I go along.
Do any of these phrases sound familiar? In our personal and professional lives we often get stuck in the mindset that we are the only ones who are good enough to get the job done. We don't trust anyone but ourselves to get it done because we all have a belief that no matter what it is, we can find the time or skills to do it. We end up spending 90% of our time to get a 10% return on investment - personally and professionally.
What would you rather be doing? Coming up with new ideas to grow your small business and/ or advancing your own personal life, or spending your entire week fiddling around trying to get your new appointment scheduling system to work right?
A successful person knows when it is time to outsource part of their life or otherwise get outside help with a particular problem instead of wasting their productivity and talent on something that is important to their life or business, but isn't part of what they really do best. Sometimes we need an outside pair of eyes to see what we have trouble focusing on.
How many small business owners take on an employee or two - a sure sign of growth - only to stagnate their own growth by spending the next six months trying to learn the ins and outs of payroll and benefits when they could have easily had someone else who excels in payroll and benefits take over that function? Maybe they are working on a problem that has them stumped, and a fresh perspective from outside their four walls would reveal the solution that has been there all along.
It's called telling the truth to yourself, and it is an important part of growing both personally and in your career or business. Until we can learn to tell ourselves that we aren't the world's best payroll clerk or quality control specialist, for example, we can never truly advance ourselves. We need to be honest with ourselves about what we do best, and what we need assistance with. A successful person knows they can never be the best at everything, so they focus their strengths on what they do best and leave the rest to others.
Sometimes letting go is the hardest thing to do, but it can be the best thing for growing - ourselves and our business. |
